Exton is part of Chester Country, one of Pennsylvania’s oldest counties along with Philadelphia and Bucks Counties. As of 2017, the census said that Exton has a population of approximately 4,974 and a median age of 38 years old. Exton has a wide and varied mix of newer housing, historical and traditional homes, and varied beautiful landscaping design in Exton complements those homes.

Exton marks the intersection of U.S. Route 30 and Pennsylvania Route 100. A theory exists that the name “Exton” comes from the town being the “X” on the map denoting the intersection. However, more likely the name comes from the one of the Extons in the United Kingdom, as many English and Welsh settlers made their new homes in Chester County. The first major industry in the county was milling due to the abundance of water power. In the nineteenth century, the iron industry flourished in Chester County and helped form the booming railroad network in Pennsylvania.

Although Exton may have moved on from the agricultural industry, the residents work to preserve the natural environment and maintain easy access to streams, parks, trails, and farmlands. The Commissioners of Chester County created and funded various programs to preserve and maintain non-irrigated farmland and provide open, recreational areas for residents. Many local wineries, equestrian facilities, and farmers’ markets have benefitted greatly from the preservation and maintenance of Exton’s natural landscape.

Exton has several parks, with the biggest one being Marsh Creek State Park, home to the 535-acre man-made Marsh Creek Lake. The lake provides ample room for fishing and boating, either in the summer or winter. Other recreational activities at Marsh Creek include swimming, hiking, and even hunting in certain areas. Smaller parks such as Kerr Park and Albert C. Miller Memorial Park offer hiking and bike trails, children’s playgrounds, and occasional concerts or festivals.
