Upon leaving Philadelphia and heading towards the quaint community of Haverford, most travel northwest on Darby Road from its intersection with Pennsylvania Route 3. This unique route best shows the difference between the Haverford Township and surrounding towns, cities, and neighborhoods as you can see a marked difference between home and landscaping design in Haverford and all others once you pass St. George’s Episcopal Church on your left and cross over the town boundary of Ardmore Avenue.

The change into Haverford includes large, historic homes. The traditional landscaping design in Haverford boasts long rows of well-manicured hedges and properly trimmed trees that overhang, but not dangerously so, the road. Additionally, one of the township’s most beloved nature trails, the Southbrook Trail, meanders along part of the wooded reserve located a few miles down on the south side of Darby Road. On the north side of this beloved thoroughway is the historic Federal School, built in 1797.

The Federal School is one of nineteen buildings that originally belonged to the large estate known as Allgates. The Allgates complex, while mostly separated out into individual properties today, remains a centerpoint of the township and continues to exemplify the fine landscaping design in Haverford.

Haverford College is another beloved township institution with long historical ties. Founded in 1833 by Welsh Quakers, this renowned college is a great source of inspiration with its gorgeous architecture and notable emphasis on traditional landscaping design in Haverford. The Haverford College Arboretum is open to the public and includes a highly desirable two-and-a-half-mile nature path along manicured grounds and alongside the Duck Pond.

The more bustling business district of Haverford lies further in the northern part of the town’s boundary and is centered upon the SEPTA line and Lancaster Ave. Yet, even Haverford’s business district is notably more tree-lined and boasts a stronger emphasis on good landscaping than many other towns located along the same rail line and roadway. Across the SEPTA line to the north stands the famous Merion Cricket Club, one of the nation’s oldest country clubs and another institution boasting beautiful landscaping.
