Wynnewood, Pennsylvania is the type of sleepy, tree-lined suburb that people hold in their minds as the quintessential suburban retreat. Situated just five miles west of Fairmount Park, the Philadelphia Zoo, and other Center City destinations, Wynnewood offers easy access to city amenities while likewise offering residents a quiet place with gorgeous landscaping design to retreat to once the day is over.

The community of Wynnewood straddles Lower Merion Township, Montgomery County, and Haverford Township — the first of which is considered the fifth-most-affluent town in the United States. The community was named Wynnewood after Dr. Thomas Wynne, the first Speaker of the Pennsylvania General Assembly and William Penn’s physician. Wynnewood is situated along the SEPTA rail line along Lancaster Avenue and offers easy access to Interstate Routes 76 and 476.

Perhaps, however, what Wynnewood is most renowned for is its gorgeous and mature old stone homes and its historic downtown shops. Along the community’s tree-lined streets are many 1930s and 1940s Tudor-style stone constructions with tiled roofs and private outdoor patios. These are large family homes with larger still front and backyard lawns known for meticulous landscaping design.

The unincorporated community of Wynnewood is primarily a residential retreat, but features some old-fashioned restaurants such as Viking Inn and Stouffer’s. Wynnewood is also home to Lankenau Hospital, one of the three leading teaching hospitals found along Philadelphia’s Main Line. One of the facilities found within Lankenau Hospital’s grounds is the Saunders House, a rehabilitation wing and home to many of the region’s premier private practices. Thus, the place that was named after a physician aptly became the home and worksite of many of the region’s best physicians.

Landscaping design in Wynnewood tends to prioritize natural elements and elements that accentuate the historic nature of many of the community’s homes. A great example of community landscape is found in Shortridge Memorial Park, a small valley park along Indian Creek with several gorgeous stone bridges that has recently been ecologically revitalized and restored.
